Sydney based social media startup Captiona, which suggests your Instagram captions for you, is celebrating achieving more than 50,000 users and its first birthday by making the app free for the month of March.

After launching the iOS app through the App Store in March last year there have been over 50,000 users download the app in over 177 countries, with zero marketing budget spent.

Nick Slater – Captiona Founder

Captiona was designed to quickly connect users to an extensive library of suggestions, aimed at matching a post and personality; saving time, decision making and energy whilst increasing engagement.

The app was created and launched by Aussie actor Nick Slater, who played Henri in the Netflix produced US television series Reign, who decided to take the leap into tech after suffering an extreme case of ‘creative blockage-itis’, rendering his Instagram captions vacant and sometimes, even dull and predictable. *These posts have since been deleted.

A common pain point of Instagram’s 800 million users (as of September 2017), Instagram has the highest drop-off rate when users reach the ‘write a caption’ screen.

The average adult makes over 35,000 conscious decisions each day (Source: Quora). Mark Zuckerberg and Barack Obama both famously wear the same outfit each day to eliminate unnecessary decision making, freeing their creative brain space for more important tasks.

Captiona is based on the same idea, it isn’t that you can’t come up with a creative caption yourself, it is about avoiding decision fatigue.

It believes productivity suffers as a result of becoming mentally exhausted from making so many irrelevant decisions, and its sees its app as a welcome relief for the 50,000 prolific posters currently using the app.

Captiona eases the pressure of writing something creative with every post, it’s also perfect if you just need a hit of inspiration to get those caption ideas flowing” said Slater.

Having amassed 35,000 followers of his own, the pressure of writing that creative, clever caption day in and day out, sometimes multiple times a day, really started to take a toll on him.

After the worst point of his ‘creative blockage-itis’ and experiencing moments like standing in line at CaliPress unable to decide on what juice to order, he decided something radical had to change, so the actor and sound engineer set to work.

When creative blockage-itis strikes, you simply use the Captiona drop down selections and type in a content word related to your post. The app then provides a list of suggestions where you can copy/paste the option most suitable to your style and personality, then continue with your posting.

The iOS Captiona App is available for free download in the Apple App Store for all of March. The Android version is currently in development and will be launched later this year.
