Ardent Leisure Group Limited (ASX:ALG) has announced the closure of its Dreamworld and Whitewater World Theme Parks from today due to restrictions related to COVID-19.

The company said that following the Queensland State and Federal Government’s most recently announced measures regarding social distancing, including restrictions on non-essential indoor and mass gatherings, the Board of Ardent has made the decision to temporarily cease operating the two parks until May 31, 2020.

However, the company noted this date may change as further information becomes known.

Ardent Leisure Chairman, Dr Gary Weiss, said it is not possible to determine how long these venues will be closed and the Board will continue to monitor the situation with a view to re-opening as soon as possible.

Both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World will retain minimal staff during the period of the closure to ensure the ongoing care of its extensive animal collection and to ensure essential maintenance works continue to be carried out. All non-essential capital expenditure has been suspended.

“The decision to close our parks is a direct result of the COVID-19 outbreak,” Dr Weiss said.

We are deeply aware that the decision to close our parks will create a great deal of uncertainty for our team members, their families and the broader community. The health and safety of our team members and guests is the Board’s number one priority.”

Dr Weiss also said that all Board members will not take fees until further notice.
