Data centre, cloud and software business, DC Two Limited (ASX: DC2), has secured the first official paying customers for its eco-friendly, transportable and modular data centres – which it believes is an Australian first for this type of application.

In an Australian first, the data centre is deployed ‘behind the meter’ at a wind farm located in Western Australia. This renewable power source offers the customer a “green powered” data centre and cloud service that lowers their environmental impact.

Locating ‘behind the meter’ also allows DC Two to access globally competitive power prices, which significantly decrease the operational costs of running the data centre. This enables savings to be passed on to the customer, thereby retaining computing workloads that would otherwise have left the country to other global regions where low power costs exist.

Managing Director, Justin Thomas, said this achievement validates the DC Modular business model and marks the successful entry into the high growth localised / edge compute market.

He added that the company has a number of modular projects underway and continues to receive multiple enquiries from customers and renewable energy providers to place modular data centres onsite. Larger organisations are also showing increasing interest in the DC Modular platform to unlock lower operating costs and increase eco-credentials across their business.

Our understanding is that this is the first successful deployment of a data centre located behind the meter in Australia,” Mr Thomas said.

“Almost every nation in the world is beginning to adopt the concept of green energy to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gases. Whether it is wind, solar or bio waste used to create energy, we have a data centre and cloud solution that can integrate into these systems.”

DC Two has developed a high density and transportable data centre that enables quick and easy deployment in any location. Based on durable ISO standard sea containers and non-ruggedized insulated variants, the transportable data centre only requires power and data connectivity and are suitable for high performance or supercomputing specific workloads.

The result is a flexible and scalable package, with industry leading efficiency, high density compute and storage capacity in a containerised form factor that allows for simplified local / edge deployment.

With the majority of these deployments occurring in regional locations, remote control and management of the data centre modules is a key element to any successful deployment. To this end, DC2 has developed full remote control and management systems, integrated with our own DC Portal to enable full customer self-service, access and control of any hosted equipment.

DC Two sees a large commercial opportunity to deploy these data centres ‘behind the meter’ at wind, solar and other renewable power sources. This provides enhanced value to the generator, reduced energy costs to DC Two and a ‘green powered’ service to the customer. The Company will now focus on accelerating the rollout of its other modular projects and advance current discussions with Australian renewable energy suppliers.
