Australia’s Star Scientific has been named Emerging Technology of the Year category finalist, in the S&P Global Platts Global Energy Awards, an annual program recognising outstanding innovation, leadership and exceptional performance in the energy sector.

Andrew Horvath, Global Group Chairman, Star Scientific Limited said he was proud that an Australian hydrogen research and development company has captured the attention of these prestigious awards, hosted by independent provider of information and benchmark prices for the commodities and energy markets, S&P Global Platts.

Being named a finalist, chosen from some 300 entries from over 36 countries, is a global recognition of Star Scientific’s achievements and a testimony to the innovation that is the Hydrogen Energy Release Optimiser, or HERO,” Mr Horvath added.

“While hydrogen – particularly green hydrogen – is enjoying significant global attention at present, there is a gap in its deployment for industrial purposes. We believe this is where HERO will allow hydrogen to achieve its full potential.”

A breakthrough technology that has no competitors, HERO has been designed to be deployable for small scale power solutions in remote locations or scaled up for large legacy industrial sites such as steel mills and coal-fired power stations where it can be retrofit to ensure continuity and sustainable power generation.

HERO is a unique catalyst that has created a new category in the hydrogen supply chain, that of a true catalyst. This means it is not used up in the catalytic process and can turn clean hydrogen into continuous industrial heat without combustion. Once the feed gases are removed it also quickly reverts to its inert state with zero combustion and pure water as the only other output.

“The Global Energy Awards, nominations and finalists continue to reflect the evolution of the industry, highlighting technology innovations, as well as accelerated focus on energy transition to a lower-carbon environment,” Martin Fraenkel, president, S&P Global Platts said.

“Innovation, resolve and transformation were characteristic throughout this year’s applications and each of the finalists and nominees are to be congratulated for their accomplishments.”

Winners will be selected from each corresponding group of finalists by the Global Energy Awards’ independent panel of judges and announced at the live-streamed Global Energy Awards Virtual Gala on Thursday 10 December 2020. Energy Company of the Year will be chosen from the entire list of finalists.
