Software provider for end-to-end traffic management, IoT and Smart City solutions specialist, Traffic Technologies Ltd (ASX: TTI) has been awarded an initial order for $1.3 million for the supply of the latest and most advanced smart streetlights.

The streetlights supplied will form part of a major upgrade announced by Ausgrid and Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) Inc. and up to 33 local councils.

The company has previously announced a contract and significant LED streetlight orders from the Ausgrid Operator Partnership in New South Wales. Ausgrid is an electricity distribution company which owns, maintains and operates the electrical networks supplying 1.7 million customers in Sydney, the Central Coast and Hunter regions of New South Wales.

Since the contract with Ausgrid was signed in August 2020, the company has received orders for over 32,000 streetlights. The latest announcement by Ausgrid indicates a significant expansion in the number of streetlights to be upgraded, with more than 92,000 to be supplied over the next three years, both for main roads and residential streets.

Traffic Technologies Managing Director, Con Liosatos, said the most advanced Smart City enabled streetlights will generate significant savings to councils across the Sydney area as well as substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions – along with accommodating future Smart City sensors.

“In partnership with Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) Inc. and up to 33 local councils, we’re looking to deliver the largest, most advanced smart streetlighting upgrade in Australia.

“Over the next three years, the partnership deal could see more than 92,000 streetlights on main roads upgraded with energy efficient LEDs and smart controls. Not only will this provide major energy savings, the addition of smart controls will help detect faults, optimise maintenance, measure energy use and facilitate off-peak dimming in the future. The lights would also be able to accommodate future smart city sensors.

“Councils can expect savings of 56% annually, with total reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of more than 34,000 tCO2-e per year from this project. This project will significantly contribute towards Australia’s net zero target. At Ausgrid we’re on a mission to reduce our environmental footprint. We’ve already upgraded 130,000 residential streetlights to LEDs, and we expect to complete a further 20,000 in the next few months.”
