GitHub Universe, the company’s annual developer event, was streamed last week and included a slew of new features targeted at the open source community. Here are some of the key announcements.
GitHub Actions get better
GitHub says they have now seen over ten thousand actions in the Marketplace from the open-source community and partners, all of which contribute to an excellent CI/CD and automation experience.
Recently released features include reusable workflows to reduce workflow duplication, API for auto-scaling self-hosted runners so users can manage infrastructure costs by scaling fleets up or down and open ID Connect (OIDC) based authentication support.
GitHub Enterprise Cloud updates
GitHub Enterprise Cloud for enterprise users receives two updates. Enterprise managed users (EMU) offers a new option to manage enterprise identities where enterprise administrators can own and manage the entire lifecycle of identities and custom repository roles allow GitHub admins to create custom permission levels for teams, organisation members, and outside collaborators (available as public beta).
GitHub Discussions
Following feedback from the beta version of GitHub Discussions, new features now include GitHub Actions integration support, discussion labels to categorise and filter discussions and availability of Discussions on GitHub Mobile. More features, like polls, are set to roll out in the coming months.
GitHub Issues
GitHub is expanding the beta to everyone using GitHub.com for the new GitHub Issues experience. This includes features like project boards and dynamic tables, iteration support and custom fields, to name a few.
GitHub Codespaces
Codespaces, which allows users to create dev environments from their browser or through Visual Studio Code, receives some key improvements like CLI support, a REST API (beta), access control for forward ports and access to GitHub Container Registry.
